Synergies

TRANSIENS NOSTRUM performs on-site research related to the place and its history, old and contemporary, in order to form each unique presentation of the installation. Through this process, synergies are created with the local community and institutions where the installation takes place, which are an integral part of the project’s implementation.

Sustainability and next steps: the presentation of the project in Athens and other Mediterranean ports.

Starting from the Bastion of St. George at the Medieval City of Rhodes, TRANSIENS NOSTRUM attempts to create a network that will host versions of the visual and sound installation adapted each time to the particularities and architecture of the selected spaces. Main characteristics are: their location next to the sea, the history and the architectural elements of the building (for example the curvature of the ceiling and the vertical axis presented by skylights or wells), the social structure and history of each port, their reference to the functioning to the port both as transit points and as haven.

Other cities where we plan to present the project are: Syros / observing the history of the shipyards (Municipal Gallery of the Cyclades), Volos / a region that has been active since the Neolithic era, (The Athanasakeion Archaelogical Museum), Piraeus, as the – still active- ancient natural port of Athens, Chania and Thessaloniki, as a crossroads of cultures.

In the wider Mediterranean basin, we aim to present the project at the archaeological site of Paphos in Cyprus for its special history, Alexandria for the expatriate Hellenism, Venice as a sinking city, Naples and the archaeological site of Pompeii as documentation of the snapshot of loss, Marseille as a multicultural port, Gibraltar, Suez and Vosporos canals as the boundary of the Mediterranean to the ocean and other seas, Byblos in Lebanon as one of the oldest Phoenician ports in the Mediterranean.

Sustainability and next steps: the organization of an educational program and the creation of a network of Greek and Mediterranean cities

The TRANSIENS NOSTRUM project, constitutes an artistic program of non-standard forms of education, which voyages  to cities in Greece and the Mediterranean. It is addressed to pupils, students and other age groups as an experiential educational process that focuses on the concept of transformation in different aspects of life. Key themes are the decay of matter, the flow of time, the water cycle and the experience of Loss as transformative processes.

The educational program in the form of a train-the-trainers seminar, aims to tutor partners of various specialties how to implement the program, after the end of the TRANSIENS NOSTRUM exhibition, creating the conditions for the sustainability of the venture. The art program has at its core a high-quality audio-visual material resulting from the works of the visual and sound installation, which can also be shown in large cinematic dimensions. The art program gives participants the opportunity of a mediated and specially curated experience of the installation.

Alongside the circumnavigation, an online archive (website) will be created encapsulating the personal oral and material imprints of the participants, weaving altogether the TRANSIENS NOSTRUM net. In parallel, research partners of various specialties such as sociologists, historians, economists, psychologists, educators, artists, theoretical critics, etc. will be invited to collaborate, researching the complexity of this multidimensional condition. We are interested in the approach of loss as a transformative force in all aspects of life.

During the TRANSIENS NOSTRUM circumnavigation, up to now, oral testimonies of visitors of the exhibition have  been  collected and recorded in collaboration with the Department of History and Social Sciences of the University of the Aegean  and Istorima Archive, funded by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation.

In our next presentation on Syros, we continue the already established collaborations, developing new ones. In every port, we seek collaboration with the Municipality, local Foundations, Institutions and Universities. This prototype program in total, will be part of SOUND CITY a research program established in collaboration with design based learning methodology (Center X UCLA).

Next to their body of work as artists, both Nakou and Pangalou have been organizing and curating prototype art programs for children and youths, for more than ten years, collaborating with the Benaki Museum, The Museum of Cycladic Art, Art ATHINA, Stegi, California Institute of the Arts, ArtCenter College of Design Pas- adena CA, Geneva University of Music (Geneva HEM), Dutch Art Institute, among others.
